OUR STORY
A JourneyThrough Generations
The story of Ocean Jewellery is not just about a brand rising in Bodrum; it is a legacy thatstretches back centuries, woven from the crafts, patience, and strength of two powerfulfamilies.
The Maternal Line: From the “Dişek” to “Kuyumcu”
In the late 19th century, in the Kabardey-Balkar-Nalçik region of the North Caucasus, surnames were not yet common, and families were known by nicknames. The nickname“Dişek” meant “goldsmith” — a badge of honor for families skilled in working with gold.
Great-uncle Kartul Dede was known as the most skilled jeweler in the family. Legend has it that while counting diamonds in the palace, he never once took his eyes off the stones, andnot a single one fell to the floor. This mastery earned him the honor of being the palace’sofficial goldsmith. However, following the Bolshevik Revolution, he and his family soughtrefuge in Turkey.
Upon arriving in Turkey, with the 1934 Surname Law coming into effect, the family took on the surname “Kuyumcu,” meaning “jeweler.” This surname became the official document of their craft and legacy.
The Paternal Line: Craftsmanship Born from War and Generations of Continuity Bodrum. With endless respect and gratitude to the Sponzafamily and the legacy of Kartul Dede, this artistic journey continues to be passed on to futuregenerations.

Mastery Through War and Continuity Through Generations
Craftsmanship Born from War and Generations of Continuity In the 1940s, Franco Sponza and his family fled the hardships of war-torn Italy and settled in Şirinyer, İzmir. Franco sacrificed everything to secure the safety of his family.
Fifteen-year-old Hasan Yavuz was working as a gardener when he proved his honesty byreturning some gold dust he found in the garden. This act led to his selection as an apprenticein the Sponza family’s jewelry craft.
Hasan not only learned the trade but passed on his knowledge to other family members. Thereason every male member of the paternal lineage has been involved in the jewelry industry is due to this deliberate training and legacy.
Among Hasan’s nephews and sons was KamilYavuz, the father of the current generation’s third official jeweler.
